A four-song EP from Local H frontman Scott Lucas that lasts nearly half an hour? These are some pretty heavy epics from a guy best known for his days as an aggressive rock performer in the grunge-rock era. These days Lucas is playing a broad-based roots-rock that turns in big band sweeps that are reminiscent of the grand warmth of Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band. The title track is a David Bowie tune that’s somehow found its way to the American heartland. “Crosshairs” and “Last One” are re-workings of two tracks from the band’s debut album, George Lassos the Moon. The re-recordings show a band breathing better than ever, capturing a “high lonesome” sound that comes from months of intensive performing. It’s deeply moving music that shows Lucas can bring a new type of intensity to his work. The addition of the old Local H tune “Hey, Rita” shows just how easy it is for Lucas to turn the new band loose and find new spirits among his old ghosts.
